Travel Document instead of a national passport? If you cannot obtain a national passport from your country at the consulate, you can apply for a travel document. There are four different types of travel documents, depending on your circumstances and immigration status in the UK.
• If you are a refugee, you can apply for a Convention travel document;
• If you are stateless, you can apply for a Stateless person’s travel document;
• If you are a citizen of any country and are currently legally in the United Kingdom and want to leave permanently, you can apply for a One-way travel document;
• If you have been refused a passport by your own country, you can apply for a Certificate of Travel.
It is important to distinguish between refugee status and humanitarian protection status. A refugee is a person who cannot return to their country of citizenship due to danger or persecution that threatens them personally.
Humanitarian protection status is granted to those who are not persecuted in their country of citizenship but for some reason cannot safely visit their country (for example, Ukrainians from Crimea).
If you are not a refugee, in order to obtain a Certificate of Travel, you will need to prove that you have been formally and unreasonably refused a passport by the authorities of the country of which you are a citizen.
You must have legal status in the United Kingdom and permission to stay here for at least six months from the date of application for a Home Office travel document. This is because other countries may not accept your travel document if you have less than six months' permission to return to the UK. If you have less than this period, you should apply for an extension of your permission to stay before applying for a travel document.
Certificates of Travel are usually issued for a period of 5 years, or if your immigration status in the UK is temporary, then the document will be issued according to the duration of your current status.
