Starting from February 25, 2026, the United Kingdom will strictly enforce the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, requiring visitors from 85 visa-free countries to obtain a “digital pre-travel authorisation.”

The affected jurisdictions include the United States, Canada, Australia, most European countries, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and a number of Gulf countries. British and Irish citizens remain exempt from these requirements.

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) costs £16, is valid for two years or until the passport expires, and allows multiple trips of up to six months each.

The UK Home Office recommends submitting an application at least three working days before departure, although most decisions are made within a few minutes. The ETA is electronically linked to a specific passport, so a new application is required when a passport is renewed.

How to apply for an ETA?

The simplest way to apply for an ETA is via the UK ETA app, available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Applicants who do not have access to a smartphone can apply through the GOV.UK website.

The application process is fast and straightforward, with most applicants receiving an automated decision within minutes when using the UK ETA app.

What happens an ETA is rejected?

If an ETA application is rejected, the applicant will be informed of the reason and may submit a new application.

If an ETA application is refused, there is no right of appeal. In this case, the individual must apply for a Visitor visa if they still wish to seek permission to enter the UK.

We will be happy to assist you with an ETA application, or any other immigration query.
