The UK Government has introduced new immigration changes to strengthen border control and reduce visa misuse. Key updates include:

Visa Brake – introduced from 26 March 2026

Student visas will be automatically refused for nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan. Skilled Worker applications will be refused for Afghan nationals.

Refugee status to be reviewed every 30 months

Refugee protection will become temporary and limited to 30 months, with regular reviews. If the situation in the status holder’s home country is considered safe, they will be expected to return.

Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme

The Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme is being updated to allow eligible individuals to remain in the UK for an additional 24-month period of permission.

The application window will also be expanded, allowing people to apply up to 90 days before their current permission expires, rather than the previous 28-day limit.

These changes apply to both people extending their existing permission and those applying for the first time.

Submitting an application within the new 90-day window will not shorten the total duration of permission granted. Any time remaining on the individual’s current status will be added to the new 24-month grant.

Global Talent

The Global Talent visa will introduce a new design pathway, allowing highly talented design professionals to work in the UK under a flexible visa.

The route is also being simplified for academic and research roles, with clearer criteria agreed with the National Academies as endorsing bodies. PhD-level roles involving academic, research, or innovation leadership at approved research organisations will qualify for a fast-track process.

 English Requirement on Settlement Routes

From March 2027, settlement English level increases from B1 to B2 on a wide range of settlement routes including Global Talent, Innovator Founder, Skilled Worker, Private Life and Long Residence.

Criminality

The Rules are being revised so that individuals convicted in the UK who receive a suspended sentence of 12 months or more will be subject to mandatory refusal or cancellation of permission to enter or remain in the UK.

ETA Enforcement & Digital Immigration System

Travellers requiring ETA must obtain it before travel or they will not be allowed to board flights.

Visitor visas and Right of Abode certificates moving to digital eVisas.
