Self-sponsorship refers to the process when an individual sponsors themselves by establishing a business or purchasing an existing company. This method can work for professionals from different areas of business who look for options to establish a company in the UK and be able to work there.
This approach offers greater flexibility compared to employer-sponsored visas and provides opportunities to grow a new or an existing business inside the UK. Ultimately, this visa can lead to settlement if an individual meets all the requirements.
Stages and Costs of the Self-Sponsorship Visa Process
First of all, you need to establish a business in the UK. The business idea must be scalable and attract global talent. It may be a new or an existing business with or without a sponsor license.
Once the business is established and operates, it must apply for a sponsor license. This license allows the business to legally hire migrant workers. The application fee depends on the size of the business and ranges from £536 to £1476.
After obtaining the sponsor licence, the business can issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) to hire skilled workers. For applicants outside the UK, a defined CoS is issued, while those already in the UK require an undefined CoS. A fee of £239 will apply.
When hiring through the Skilled Worker visa route, the business must pay the Immigration Skills Charge. The cost is £364 for small or charitable businesses and £1,000 for medium or large businesses, for each 12-month period.
In addition to these business-related costs, the applicant is responsible for:
The Skilled Worker visa fee (£719 to £1,636 depending on location and visa duration).
The Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,035 per year).
Any applicable legal fees.
To qualify for the Skilled Worker visa UK, applicants must also meet the English language proficiency requirement at CEFR B1 level.
A self-sponsorship visa is available to business professionals who wish to establish a business in the UK or acquire an existing UK-based business. Applicants must have sufficient funds to meet the business's financial needs and must appoint key personnel with specific responsibilities within the business. Additionally, they are required to have a UK-settled person or British citizen to act as the Authorising officer.
